During the month of July 2011, Torkom’s blog articles #81 - 84 will focus on the theme of spiritual freedom based on excerpts from his book, The Science of Becoming Oneself. As Torkom wrote, … “the keynote of this book is freedom, the revelation and release of the unknown mystery in man, the freedom of lightning!...[T]hose who crave freedom and cannot find it in the “freedoms” they have, are invited to read this book and live it.” We hope you enjoy these articles and that they may inspire you to strive toward experiencing the true freedom within yourself.
The process of evolution is beautifully explained in the story of the Prodigal Son who received his share of inheritance from his Father, then journeyed to far-off lands where he squandered his wealth in riotous living. While tending swine and suffering great deprivation, gradually the memory of his Father’s home dawned in his consciousness, and he pronounced the most poignant statement ever recorded:
I will arise and go to my Father.
As he approached, the Father rushed forth part way to embrace him. The progress of humanity or of an individual begins when man starts to raise himself and walk toward his Real Self. Our Father is our Self. The long road that separates us from our Father seems to us so far, as far as the farthest star, but actually it is closer than our eyes.
The reason for this illusion is that throughout the ages we — the Real Father in us — have identified ourselves with the form side of life, and we have lost ourselves in the running water of transient forms. This can be explained if we take the process of sleep as an example. Note how your active consciousness gradually becomes more distant, sinking deeper and deeper into apparent nothingness. In that stage of sleep it seems as though we do not even exist. So it is with the Spark, the Father, Who gradually loses Himself as he identifies with coarser and denser matter — until one day He stands on the pole directly opposite His Real Being.
The lowest point of identification is reached when a man cannot distinguish between himself and his form. He exists as a living form. Then, gradually, he perceives that there is a difference between his form and other forms. Following this recognition of the physical form, he develops the emotional nature and later the mental nature. As his mental nature develops, he realizes that he is a separated being.
After long ages of experience, this sense of separation increases and forms a permanent state in his consciousness. This permanent state of separation becomes a dominating factor, a governing factor, an “I.” For a very long period this “I” is worshiped. During that time it becomes the central pivot of the life of the man; he sacrifices everything to save and keep that “I.” It is the idol behind which there is the true God, but identification with it is so real that the man never thinks beyond it. It is, for him, a life preserver in the ocean of existence. He thinks that he will be lost forever if he loses the idol, the little self, the “I.” There comes a time when the Inner Lord begins to move, and gradually the power of the idol lessens; the small lives of man’s nature — of his physical, emotional, and mental vehicles — respond with a new vibration.
Centuries pass. The man cultivates his physical plane life and makes it a beautiful garden. He cleans the muddy and agitated waters of his emotional world, purifying his motives, his thoughts, his words, and then turns his face toward his Father’s Home. He is now willing to tread the Path consciously. He must walk for ages and ages until the Father is seen and at-one-ment is achieved.
To tread this fiery way, he learns and uses the science of becoming oneself. There are three main steps involved in this science….
